Historic Building Collapse on Detroit & Hopkins Ave.


(Saturday April 26, 2014 B Shift)

Lakewood fire companies were dispatched to the 12000 block of Detroit Ave. for a building that collapsed with one injured victim just before 4:00pm.

Fire companies arrived on scene of a one story brick commercial building reporting that the parapet had collapsed.  Lakewood Squad 1 treated a  civilian that was injured when he was knocked off his bike while riding pass the building when it collapsed. The victim was treated for minor injuries.

The building was checked by Lakewood fire companies to make sure all occupants were out of the building and the Ohio region 2 collapse search & rescue team was called to the scene to shore up the building to prevent further collapse.

The Ohio region 2 collapse search & rescue team were on scene for several hours shoring up the building. Detroit Ave was closed for several hours between Newman and Hopkins Ave. while fire crews worked to stabilize the building.

It is unknown why the building collapsed and it is being investigated. No one was in the building at the time of collapse and there were no other noted injuries.
