Apartment Building Roof Catches Fire on Detroit Extension


(Wednesday January 7, 2015 C-Shift)

Lakewood Engine 2  was dispatched to the 18800 block of Detroit Extension for wires arcing near an apartment building around 1700 hours on Wednesday afternoon.

Upon arrival on scene Engine 2 reported smoke and flames showing from the roof line of a multi unit brick apartment building. A full response was called and all hands were put to work. The fire extended through multiple suites. Ceiling was pulled and fire crews encountered fire in the ceiling channels of 2 units. An 1-3/4 attack line was pulled and used to extinguish the fire. The flames were quickly extinguished and thorough overhaul was initiated to check for further extension. Truck 1 was sent to the roof to evaluate conditions and to set up vertical ventilation. The fire was quickly brought under control.

Rocky River was called in to assist in fire suppression. Crews faced adverse weather conditions and high winds in battling this blaze. There were no injuries and the fire is still under investigation.
